Washington, D.C. —  Out of respect for veterans who have fought to protect the flag, Sen. John Thune said today he is introducing a Constitutional Amendment to provide Congress with the power to outlaw desecration of the American Flag.

“This legislation is important to the people of South Dakota, important to veterans who have spilled their blood for this country and it’s important to all Americans,” Thune said. “I believe our flag is more than just cloth and ink. It is a universally recognized symbol that stands for liberty, and freedom. It is the history of our nation, and it’s marked by the blood of those who died defending it.”

Thune will introduce the Amendment with Sen. Orrin Hatch (R-UT) and expects broad bipartisan support for the measure.

“Given the strong bipartisan support for this issue in Congress and throughout the nation, I am hopeful we can enact this important Amendment,” Thune said. “I am introducing this Amendment so those who have bravely defended our nation in the past – and those defending it today – can have the flag protected.”
